Castlehaven Community Centre are introducing a new weekend nursery to help local parents

Castlehaven Community Centre are introducing a weekend nursery – thought to be one of the first of its kind.

The innovative scheme is designed to help out parents who have to work on a Saturday or Sunday – such as those manning stalls at nearby Camden Market.  In such difficult economic times, with huge pressures on funding, it is those charities who are constantly innovating and prepared to try out new ideas that will best whether the storm.  It’s great to see Castlehaven doing just that.

The weekend nursery opens on 14th January, but there will be an open day on Saturday 10th December for those who would like to find out more.

If you would like to book a space, you can give Castlehaven a call on 0207 485 3386, or email them here.  Full details, including directions to the community centre, can be found on the weekend nursery flyer (pdf document).

Children of all ages can enter the Steele's Village pumpkin competition

Residents and businesses in Steele’s Village are organising a Halloween pumpkin competition.

Judges will be looking for Haverstock’s spookiest Halloween pumpkins on 31st October, from 4pm. The competition is open to children of all ages whose families live, work, shop or go to school in the area.

To enter, please email organiser Lynn Whiting, or drop your details into any of Steele’s Village’s shops before Friday 28th October.

Camden will be one of three areas to benefit from free parenting classes, it has been announced.

All local parents in Haverstock with children under six will be able to benefit directly from this Lib Dem government initiative to provide free classes.

I’m really pleased Camden will be one of the areas to trial this scheme. A recent Unicef report showed the huge pressure that parents in the UK are under. Of course all parents find it tough sometimes, and we need to get out the message that there’s no shame in asking for a bit of help and support. Lots of people already benefit from pre-natal classes, and it makes sense to carry on supporting parents after the child is born.

The classes won’t be compulsory and shouldn’t be about preaching – instead we need to help parents find the methods and practices that work best for them and their child.

More details should come out over the next month or so, but for those that are interested the classes should hopefully kick off in Spring 2012.
